Non-Academic Year residence halls close for the Winter Break at 5:00 pm on December 14 and reopen at 12:00 noon on January 1. As the break approaches, students living in Buchanan-Droke, Founders, Futrall, Gibson, Gladson-Ripley, Hotz Honors, Maple Hill East, South & West, Pomfret, Reid, and Yocum Halls will receive a hall closing checklist to complete and sign prior to leaving campus. The Northwest Quad, Duncan Avenue Apartments, Gregson, Holcombe, Humphreys, and Walton Halls remain open during the break for residents only.
If your student needs to stay in the residence hall past 5:00 pm on December 14, then your student must complete an Extended Stay Request Form and return it to their Coordinator of Residence Education (CRE) no later than Monday, December 10. The maximum length for a Fall Semester Extended Stay is 12:00 noon on Sunday, December 16.
Below is a Winter Break Room Checklist, provided by University Housing, which your student will receive before they leave campus. Use this list as a reminder to discuss these items with them.
Winter Break Room Checklist
- Lock doors and windows
- Leave blinds down and open
- Turn off all lights and alarm clocks
- Unplug: hair dryers, irons, curling irons, coffee maker, computer, TV, and any other appliances
- Refrigerators are to be emptied, defrosted, and unplugged. Place a thick towel underneath refrigerators to catch any excess moisture
- Remove fish from room
- Take all medications
- Take tickets for athletic events
- Remove trash from room and properly dispose of it
- Remove any items/furniture blocking your heating/cooling unit
- Clear floor of belongings as pipes have been known to freeze, burst, and cause flooding
- Secure bike/scooter in a proper location or take it home for the break period
During the break, staff in all residence halls carry out routine pest control procedures and perform room furniture inventory audits.
