November is a busy time of year with tests and assignments, travel for the holidays, and advising for spring classes. For some students, November can be even more stressful if they have not chosen a major or if they are considering changing their major. Regardless of where your student is on the spectrum of deciding on a major and/or career, we have included tips below to help you and your student ensure their success at the U of A.
Choosing a Major
One of the main reasons students reconsider or hesitate to declare a major is because they do not understand the career options associated with the major. Encourage your student to visit the “Explore Careers” section of the Career Development Center website. This site also includes tips on researching occupations, like job outlooks, job descriptions, and more.
Involvement
Academic success is extremely important, but it is not the only aspect employers consider. Involvement sets your student apart from other candidates and shows his or her initiative, time management skills, and experience working with others. A student organization, part-time job, or volunteer role are all good options for students to investigate career options and network with professionals. The University of Arkansas has approximately 400 Registered Student Organizations for students to choose from. If your student does not identify with one of the existing organizations, they can create one.
Job Shadowing
Gaining practical hands-on experience is invaluable for your student as they begin to think about changing their major. After brainstorming potential career paths, encourage your student to contact professionals in their desired field to pursue a job shadowing experience. This will give your student insight into the day-to-day requirements of this career and can help them gauge whether or not this field is something of interest to them.
Remind your student that help is available at the Career Development Center. Whether it is meeting with a Career Advisor, taking an online interest inventory, or helping brainstorm possibilities for internships or campus involvement, the Career Development Center is committed to assisting your student in their career development and success.
The Career Development Center is located in Arkansas Union 607. Information is available at career.uark.edu or by calling (479) 575-2805.
